Have you ever heard the phrase “you are what you eat” and wondered what it really means? Within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), food therapy is one of the modalities used to treat the body. The food we eat has properties that create changes in our bodies. Let us take dairy products, for example. Dairy products create phlegm in the body. You will notice this effect when you catch a cold or drink milk. There are different types of phlegm that affect the body. Excessive weight is a type of non-substantial phlegm. The mucus that comes out of our body is considered substantial phlegm. Phlegm, in general, creates obstructions in the body. This obstruction can cause problems in the body and lead to disharmony and/or disease. This does not mean that you should avoid all dairy products. It just means that it should be limited and properly prepared.
One example of a food that can help the body is spinach. Spinach is cool in nature and can relieve hypertension, anemia, bleeding, thirst, constipation, headaches, dizziness and pink eye. It can also stimulate the pancreas to assist in digestion. This does not mean you should just eat spinach because you have these conditions. There could be other issues that need to be taken care of first. If there is a dampness problem in your body, and you eat a lot of spinach to help with your headache and dizziness, the problem could worsen. We will teach you how to understand your body and its nutritional needs. Devising a diet plan is one of the many aspects by which Holistic Family Care can help you with the healing process of your body.
